The Pandemic has shown that previous habits aren’t actually necessary, while others may have forever changed. It turns out that not everyone has to commute to and from the office; we can work from home and still be productive; we can reduce the amount of driving lanes in our streets for pedestrians and restaurants while maintaining reasonable levels of connectivity. We’ve also found that having to stay at home further changed our shopping habits, with products delivered to our doors while previously coveted ground floor retail spaces sit empty.
With a vast inventory of vacant office and retail space potentially never needed again, how will we repurpose these spaces to fit into this new evolution of the city? Knowing that construction can be lengthy and construction codes lock us into function-specific building form, how can regulations and construction methods catch up to the ever changing needs of the present? This session will discuss these challenges and creative solutions to adapting these spaces across the city.
